ABOUT
As the old saying goes, “you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink” ... well, what if a horse could lead our health care workers and veterans? What if a horse could show them how to trust, feel safe, and find themselves again?
.
Being a prey animal, Horses are sensitive and astute, aware of their surroundings and quick to react. Horses don’t judge and horses don’t lie. But they provide immediate feedback, significantly enlightening the participant about the horse and themselves. By including horses in specifically designed educational experiences, equine-assisted specialists have greatly multiplied the participant’s rate of success to self-discovery and positive change. Working with horses creates a unique memory that the attendee will remember far longer than conventional methods.
In our case, our Newfoundland Ponies work with first responders, health care workers and veterans.
Heal The Heroes™ was created at the peak of the Covid 19 crisis in 2020, shortly after the program’s founder and facilitator*, Emily Aho, a retired RN, lost two family members to COVID-19, one of whom was her father. Emilio DiPalma was a WWII veteran, a courtroom guard at the Nuremberg War Crimes trial of the Major War Criminals, Hitler's top henchmen. He died along with 75 other soldiers at a Soldier's Home. Understanding the horrific working conditions, stress, strain, heartache Emily decided to help as best as she could. She knew the power of healing the ponies brought to people. While mourning her father's death, Heal The Heroes™ was born of love, empathy, compassion, and understanding. Surprisingly, running the program for those on the Covid front lines, helped Emily heal too.
You can read about her father here: https://www.sentinelsource.com/news/local/leo-dipalma-survived-world-war-ii-and-guarded-infamous-nazis-covid-19-brought-him-down/article_c0abd34d-7d61-5618-a86c-e0fea899ce24.html
At the Newfoundland Pony Conservancy Center, critically endangered Newfoundland ponies guide participants through a series of objective based exercises that facilitate life skill experiences, promoting knowledge and insight of self, building relationships with horses, and others. Working with the ponies is an enjoyable as well as empowering experience.
Grants, and assistance from our community, with fundraising, sponsorship, and donations, allows that to happen.
Collectively this allows us to give back to these health care workers and veterans who risk their lives to save all of ours.

*Please note - All facilitators are professionally trained and certified.
